MRI Cost in Guwahati: 2026 Price Guide for Every Scan Type

Dr. Pranab Hazarika · Senior Radiologist, Guwahati12 Apr 20268 min read

MRI scans in Guwahati cost anywhere between ₹3,800 for a basic Brain MRI on a 1.5 Tesla machine and ₹25,000 for a Whole Body MRI on a 3 Tesla scanner. The price you actually pay depends on the type of scan, the field strength of the machine, whether contrast is used, and the centre you choose. This guide covers each commonly ordered MRI scan in Guwahati, what is included in the published price, and what extra charges you should ask about before you book.

Why MRI prices vary across centres in Guwahati

Three things drive the price difference between a 1.5T Brain MRI in Paltan Bazaar and a 3T Brain MRI in Six Mile. The first is machine cost. A new 3 Tesla machine costs three to four times more than a 1.5 Tesla unit and runs higher service contracts. Centres with newer 3T machines pass on part of that cost. The second is reporting turnaround. Centres that promise 24-hour signed reports pay their radiologists more and price the scan slightly higher. The third is location overhead. A centre on GS Road or Six Mile pays much higher rent than a centre in a quieter neighbourhood.

That said, the difference between the cheapest 1.5T scan and a 3T scan for the same body part is usually around 15 to 25 per cent. For routine scans where image quality on 1.5T is fully diagnostic, the price difference does not always reflect a clinical advantage.

Brain MRI in Guwahati

A plain Brain MRI in Guwahati starts from ₹3,800 at most centres and goes up to ₹4,500 on a 3T machine. Adding contrast (gadolinium) adds another ₹2,000 to ₹3,000. If your doctor has asked for an MRI Brain with Contrast, expect to pay ₹6,500 to ₹7,500 in total. Specialised studies like MR Spectroscopy add another ₹2,000 to ₹3,500.

Spine MRI in Guwahati

Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine MRIs are priced almost identically at ₹4,200 to ₹4,800 plain. Some centres on GS Road and in Six Mile run combined cervical-plus-lumbar packages for around ₹7,500, which is useful for patients with neck and lower back symptoms together. A whole spine MRI (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar all in one sitting) costs around ₹9,500 to ₹11,500.

Joint MRIs: knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, wrist

Joint MRIs in Guwahati cluster around ₹4,000 to ₹5,200 plain. Knee MRI is the most commonly booked joint scan in the city, often after sports or road accident injuries. MR Arthrography of the knee or shoulder, where contrast is injected directly into the joint, costs ₹8,000 to ₹13,000 because of the higher complexity.

Abdomen and pelvis MRI

Whole Abdomen MRI in Guwahati starts at ₹6,500 and goes up to ₹7,500 at a 3T centre. Adding contrast brings the total to around ₹9,500 to ₹13,000. MRCP, a specialised study of the bile and pancreatic ducts, costs around ₹6,500 to ₹7,500. A Pelvis MRI starts at ₹5,500 and a combined Abdomen and Pelvis study is usually around ₹11,000 to ₹14,000.

Whole Body MRI

Whole Body MRI is the most expensive routine scan, ranging from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000. The wide range reflects the difference between 1.5T and 3T scans, the inclusion of contrast, and whether the centre bundles a follow-up consultation with a radiologist. Centres in Six Mile and Khanapara are the main providers of this study in Guwahati.

Cardiac and Breast MRI

Cardiac MRI in Guwahati starts at around ₹12,000. It is offered at a small number of centres because it requires both specialised software and a radiologist trained in cardiac imaging. Breast MRI, used mainly for high-risk screening, starts at ₹8,000.

Vascular MRIs: MR Angiography

MR Angiography (MRA) of the brain, neck, abdomen, or limbs starts at ₹6,000 plain. With contrast, expect ₹7,500 to ₹9,500. Some MRA studies are done without contrast at all using a technique called time-of-flight imaging, which reduces the cost.

What is not included in the published price

Most Guwahati centres list the price for the scan itself. Charges that may be added separately include: the contrast agent (₹2,000 to ₹3,500), a sedation fee for anxious patients (₹500 to ₹1,000), a film printing fee if you ask for hard copies (₹200 to ₹500), and a CD copy fee if you want the raw images. Always ask before you book.

Insurance and cashless billing

Most national health insurance policies cover MRI scans when they are prescribed by a doctor. Several centres in Guwahati offer cashless billing with major TPAs, which means you do not pay upfront if your insurance is approved. Bring your insurance card, the doctor's prescription, and a valid photo ID.

How to choose the right centre

Pick a 3T centre when image quality matters most: Cardiac MRI, Breast MRI, fine cartilage assessment of the knee, and pituitary imaging. For routine spine and brain scans, a 1.5T machine at a good centre is fully diagnostic and costs less. Always ask the centre about reporting turnaround. A signed report on a 1.5T machine within 24 hours is more useful than a 3T scan that takes four days to report.
